Sapphire vs mineral vs acrylic: which watch crystal matters?

Sapphire resists scratches but is brittle. Acrylic scratches easily and polishes out in minutes. Mineral and Hardlex sit between. Sapphire is no longer a premium signal — 83 of 128 watches here already have it, so expect it rather than pay for it.

Three materials, three different failure modes

The crystal is the transparent cover over the dial, and the choice is a trade between two kinds of damage. Sapphire (synthetic, grown in a furnace) is dramatically harder than steel, so ordinary contact does not mark it — but hardness and brittleness travel together, and a sharp knock is more likely to crack it. Acrylic is plastic: it marks if you look at it wrong, and it shrugs off impacts that would break sapphire. Mineral glass and Seiko's hardened Hardlex sit in between on both axes.

The thing nobody tells you about acrylic

Acrylic's scratches are removable. A cloth, a little polishing compound, two minutes, and the crystal is clear again — and you can do that as many times as you like. Sapphire is the opposite bargain: it will almost certainly never scratch, but if it chips or cracks, the fix is a replacement crystal and a watchmaker. Neither is strictly better. One is maintainable, the other is durable.

Why sapphire stopped being a buying signal

Sapphire is concentrated above the entry tier in this database. Once a spec appears at every price, it stops distinguishing anything. Read it as a floor to expect, and spend your attention on the movement and how the case fits instead.

Common questions

Is a sapphire crystal worth it?

It was a genuine differentiator when it was rare. It is not any more: 83 of the 128 watches here with a stated crystal use sapphire, including 42% of the mid tier. Above roughly the entry tier you should expect it rather than pay extra for it.

Does sapphire scratch?

Very rarely in daily life. Sapphire is far harder than steel, so keys, desks and door frames do not mark it. It can still be scratched by materials harder than it — diamond, and the aluminium-oxide grit in some sandpapers and concrete dust. The trade-off is that hardness comes with brittleness: sapphire resists scratching but is more likely to crack under a sharp impact than acrylic is.

Is acrylic crystal bad?

No — it is different, and it has one genuine advantage. Acrylic scratches easily but the scratches polish out with a cloth and a mild abrasive in a couple of minutes, so an acrylic watch can be returned to as-new indefinitely. Sapphire will not scratch, but if it ever does, you replace it. 12 watches here use acrylic — mostly vintage-styled and tool pieces where it is a deliberate choice.

What is Hardlex?

Hardlex is Seiko's proprietary hardened mineral glass. It sits between ordinary mineral and sapphire: more scratch-resistant than plain mineral, less so than sapphire, and more impact-tolerant than sapphire. 10 watches here use it. It is a defensible engineering choice on a tool watch rather than a corner cut.
