Can you swim with a 100m watch? What the ratings actually mean

Water-resistance figures are static pressure tests, not swimming depths. 30 m means handwashing and rain. 100 m is the usual swimming threshold. Only a watch marked DIVER'S has met the separate ISO 6425 dive standard. 95 of 128 watches here reach 100 m or more.

Computed from 128 watches across 39 brands · last verified 2026-06-27

Why the number is not a depth

A water-resistance rating comes from a laboratory pressure test (ISO 22810) in which a motionless watch is held at a pressure equivalent to that depth. Nothing in that test resembles swimming. Moving your arm through water creates dynamic pressure spikes well above the static equivalent, which is why the practical guidance for every rating sits far below the number printed on the case.

Ratings in this database. 30m 16 · 50m 16 · 60m 1 · 100m 33 · 150m 2 · 200m 44 · 300m 16. 95 reach 100 m or more (the usual swimming threshold); 33 sit below it and should stay dry beyond a splash.

What each rating actually permits

30m (splash) — 16 watches

Handwashing and rain only — not for swimming. Common on dress watches.

50m — 16 watches

Surface swimming — but keep it out of the shower.

100m — 33 watches

Swimming and snorkeling — the everyday-rugged sweet spot.

200m (dive) — 44 watches

ISO-dive-capable territory — scuba and hard use.

300m+ (pro dive) — 16 watches

Serious dive watches with screw-down crowns and beefy gaskets.

ISO 22810 vs ISO 6425: the distinction that matters

Almost every water-resistance figure you see comes from ISO 22810 — a static pressure test, applied to a sample. A watch legally marked DIVER'S has met ISO 6425 instead, which is a genuinely different bar: a unidirectional bezel, legibility in total darkness, resistance to thermal shock, salt water and magnetism, and testing of every individual watch rather than a production sample. A 200 m rating and a DIVER'S 200 m marking are not the same claim, and the second one is much harder to earn.

The part that expires

Water resistance is a property of gaskets, and gaskets age. They compress, dry out and lose their seal over years whether or not the watch ever gets wet, and hot showers and soap accelerate it. The rating on the case back describes the watch when it left the factory. If you swim with a watch regularly, the only honest way to know the rating still holds is a pressure test.

Watches here rated 200 m or more

These 60 have the most headroom — the shortlist if the watch is going in the water regularly.

Common questions

Can you swim with a 100m water resistant watch?

Generally yes — 100 m is the usual threshold for swimming and snorkelling. The reason it is the threshold, rather than 50 m, is that the rating comes from a static pressure test: the watch is held motionless at a pressure equivalent to that depth in a lab. Swinging your arm through water briefly generates pressure well above the static figure, so the rating needs headroom over the depth you actually reach.

Does 30m water resistance mean 30 metres deep?

No, and this is the single most misread spec in watches. A 30 m rating means the watch survived a static pressure equivalent to 30 m in a test tank — it does not mean you can swim to 30 m. In practice 30 m covers handwashing and rain, and nothing more. 16 watches here carry it, mostly dress pieces.

Can you shower with a watch?

The rating is only part of it. Hot water expands metal and rubber at different rates, and soap degrades the gaskets that do the sealing — so showering is harder on a watch's seals than swimming in cold water at the same depth. A 100 m-plus watch will generally cope; a 30 or 50 m watch should stay off your wrist.

What makes a real dive watch different?

A separate standard. Ordinary water-resistance figures come from ISO 22810; a watch marked DIVER'S has met ISO 6425, which additionally requires things like a unidirectional bezel, legibility in darkness, resistance to thermal shock and salt water, and — crucially — testing of every individual watch rather than a sample. A 200 m watch without the DIVER'S marking is water-resistant to 200 m; it is not certified as a dive instrument.

Does water resistance wear off?

Yes. The seal depends on rubber gaskets, which compress, dry and age whether or not you swim. A rating printed on a case back is a statement about the watch when it was new. If you actually swim with a watch, a periodic pressure re-test is the only way to know the rating still holds.
